وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ
Was läßt dich wissen, vielleicht läutert er sich
Woher sollst du es wissen, vielleicht will er sich läutern
What made you think that he will not grow in virtue,
What would inform you (O haughty one) but that he might grow in purity (by doing good deeds)?
And what could make you (O Prophet!) know that he might purify himself.
Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity,
How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed,
And what do you know, he may be of the pure!
And what would make you know that he would grow (spiritually)
And what makes you know/informs you maybe/perhaps he, he purifies/corrects (himself).
How could you tell? He might have sought to purify himself
Or be mindful, so the Reminder should profit him?
You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself,
What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)
And what would make you know that he would purify himself,
But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)?
But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-
